UK retail sales miss forecasts as sterling slips to 1.3375

24hrfx Desk · Oct 23, 2026

UK retail sales volumes fell 0.4% month on month in September, a larger drop than the 0.1% decline forecast, according to the figures cited in Investing.com's Friday report. August was revised up to a 0.7% rise. Annual growth slowed to 0.8% from 2.7%, below the 1% expected.

GBP/USD was down roughly 0.1% at about 1.3375 in early European trade. The report noted that sterling fell less than the euro, which suggests the UK data was not the main driver and that the broader risk-off tone (see our equity sell-off brief) mattered more. Consumer spending data is a secondary input compared with inflation, which this week came in hot; see our UK CPI brief.

Why does a retail sales miss matter for currency traders? Weak spending can temper expectations for tighter policy, which is the channel that moves FX. Our article on interest rate expectations explains why pricing matters more than any single release. Note that retail sales are volatile and often revised, as August's upgrade shows.
