Dollar slips through 157.50 yen floor as US yields ease

The dollar weakened against the yen in Tokyo on Thursday. According to a Tokyo market report, USD/JPY traded at 157.32 to 157.34 at 3 p.m., down from about 158.15 at 9 a.m. and 158.14 at the previous New York close. It touched 157.30 in the afternoon.

The move mattered because 157.50 had been treated as the recent range floor. A clear break below it triggered stop-loss selling, the report said. Weak Japanese and South Korean stock trading and soft US stock futures added to demand for the yen, while US long-term yields eased from about 5.10% to 5.08%.

One strategist quoted in the report named 157 as the next level to watch, saying a break below could lead to a further leg lower. Whether that happens is unknown; levels like this are reference points, not forecasts. For context, EUR/USD was around 1.1250 and EUR/JPY near 177.00 in the same session.

For traders, the lesson is about how range breaks behave: stops cluster beyond obvious floors, so the first move through can be fast and then retrace. If you trade yen pairs, check spreads and size accordingly. See support and resistance zones and spreads and slippage. Our earlier note had USD/JPY near 158.
