China's third-quarter GDP came in at 4.5% year on year on Monday, slightly above the 4.4% consensus and up from 4.3% in Q2. Quarter-on-quarter growth was 1.2% against a 1.1% forecast. September activity data also beat: industrial production rose 5.5% (5.4% expected) and retail sales 1.1% (0.5% expected), though analysts noted domestic demand and property remain soft spots.

The Australian dollar was the main beneficiary. AUD/USD rose around 0.4% in Asian hours to trade near 0.6970, its second straight daily gain. The onshore yuan firmed to about 6.681 per dollar, its strongest level since July 2022, while the offshore yuan touched four-year highs.

The data offered a reminder of how China releases transmit through AUD and NZD, the market's usual proxies for Chinese demand. Whether the move holds will likely depend on broader risk appetite and US yields as the week's calendar unfolds.
